Online Engagement Between Opposing Political Protest Groups via Social Media is Linked to Physical Violence of Offline Encounters

The rise of the Internet and social media has allowed individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, opinions to communicate one another in an open largely unstructured way. One important question is whether nature online engagements between groups relates encounters these real world. We analyzed conversations that occurred members protest from opposite sides political spectrum, obtained Facebook event pages used organize upcoming protests rallies United States Kingdom occurrence violence during rallies. Using natural language processing text analysis, we show increased engagement associated when met level taking place substantial, can be characterized as negative, brief, low integrative complexity. These findings suggest opposing may use environments engage hostile ways.
